Diabetes is not merely an instability of sugar levels, it also increases the risk of heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, and narrowing of arteries and other health issues, which cause mental and economic havoc in the lives of millions. Thousands of people are unable to afford the treatments and hundreds of people are succumbing to the disease due to ignorance. Adding to the woes now the young generation is pushed into the trap slowly. But what is more scaring is the fact that we have considered it as common as an aging process rather than being worried about it.
Rice is not the real culprit!
Apart from fast foods, rice has been always considered a major culprit for diabetes. But how a food which has been there with us for thousands of years can cause diabetes in recent decades. The real problem lies in the way it is been processed, white rice we have today loses its major nutritional value when it is polished for customer appeal. This process converts the complex carbohydrate into a refined one which results in a sudden surge in sugar level in the body disturbing the insulin level. So, it is the process, not the rice that is to blame for.
Is the damage beyond repair?
Despite the disease turning into an epidemic, there are still ways to prevent and control it. Foods like, traditional rice varieties and millets are the keys. Proven to have a good amount of fiber, proteins and a low glycaemic index traditional foods are the healthy options now the health-conscious societies are turning to. Apart from being healthy, these are the staple diets one could have without compromising their food habits and still give a treat to their taste buds.

If a person couldn’t resist taking white rice for lunch, then we suggest to take Kalanamak rice (red) once in 4 days which has low glycemic index, which is also a part of the Indian diet for the past 3000 years. After 3 months, it is important to take hand pounded ponni rice (brown in colour) for the lunch once in 3 days.
