About Hand Pounded Toor/Arhar Dal
Toor dal is widely grown in tropical and semitropical regions around the world, with India accounting for 72% of the major production of pigeon pea in an area of 3.9 million hectares.
It is a drought-resistant plant that can be grown in areas with little rainfall. Toor dal is grown as a stand-alone crop or in combination with cereals such as sorghum, pearl millet, or maize, or with other legumes such as peanuts.
The seed pods are flat, cone, and have a length of 5-9 cm. Each pod contains 3-9 seeds that are white, cream, yellow, purple, or a combination of any of these colours. It grows to a height of 0.5-4.0 m, and the crop generally lasts three to five years, though the yield falls after the first two years.
